Kyrie Irving scored 17 points in his first game since tearing his ACL as the Mavericks beat the Rockets 132-115 in Macao.
MACAO — Kyrie Irving scored on a driving reverse layup 14 seconds into Sunday's game, his first since he tore the ACL in his left knee against the Sacramento Kings on March 3, 2025.
The Dallas Mavericks beat the Houston Rockets, 132-115, at The Venetian Arena. Houston won Friday's opener, 135-117, so both teams leave Macao at 1-1 in the preseason. Sunday's crowd of 11,711 was a sellout.
Irving sat out Friday. On Sunday, he finished with 17 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 assists in 22 minutes, shooting 6-of-13 from the field, 2-of-6 from 3-point range, and 3-of-3 at the line. He had 14 points by halftime and did not play in the fourth quarter.
Irving said Mavericks coach Dusty May called the first play of the game for him, and that he had his mind made up to attack.
"Just felt good to get that out the way. I was imagining how I was going to go, dreaming about how I was going to go, and just glad that I got that out the way," Irving said.
"Just incredibly grateful for my teammates as well and their support," Irving continued. "Just seeing them rise up off the bench to celebrate me as well, that always feels good."
The 2026-27 season will be Irving's 16th. Dallas went 26-56 last season without him and missed the playoffs.
May did not expect Irving to play this well after so long away.
"I've said it from the first time I watched him in the workout, he's an artist. He's a jazz musician," May said. "And so just to see the way he thinks the game, manipulates a game, and even there were a couple shots that looked great were off by a centimeter that obviously they're going to drop once he gets into game rhythm."
Sunday was also the first game Irving and Cooper Flagg have played together. Flagg had 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 7 assists in 25 minutes. He went 3-of-10 from the field and 7-of-8 at the line.
Houston led 31-28 after Amen Thompson's pull-up with 10:37 left in the second quarter.
Dallas outscored the Rockets 21-3 over the next six and a half minutes, and Daniel Gafford's free throw on an and-one with 4:05 left made it 49-34. Gafford scored all 9 of his points in the quarter on 3-of-3 shooting.
Dallas led 58-51 at halftime. P.J. Washington, who missed Friday's game, had 10 points in 16 minutes and did not play after the break.
Isaiah Crawford's 3 tied the game at 77 with 5:32 left in the third. Dallas scored 15 of the next 17 points, and Max Christie's transition 3 made it 92-79 with 2:38 to go.
The Mavericks led 95-85 after three quarters, and the lead reached 19 in the final minute.
Zaccharie Risacher led Dallas with 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting. He scored 9 in the fourth quarter on 4-of-4 shooting. Christie and Naji Marshall each had 14 points, and Marshall added 3 steals.
Sergio de Larrea had 9 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists and was plus-34 in 22 minutes.
Dallas shot 48.2% from the field, 15-of-40 from 3-point range, and 35-of-39 at the line.
The Mavericks scored 50 points in the paint to Houston's 40 and had a 24-11 edge in fast-break points.
Houston turned the ball over 22 times, and Dallas scored 32 points off those turnovers.
Rockets coach Ime Udoka said some of that comes with new guys and young combinations being out there together, along with conditioning.
"We saw too many, way too many turnovers both nights. 22 tonight, 21 the other night, and gotta clean that up and get back to where we were a few years ago, which was top five, and take care of the ball," Udoka said.
Kevin Durant, Alperen Şengün, Fred VanVleet, and Steven Adams did not dress for Houston.
Marcus Smart led the Rockets with 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists, going 4-of-9 from 3. Reed Sheppard scored 17 points, Thompson had 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists, and Jabari Smith Jr. added 14 points and 9 rebounds.
Houston shot 14-of-47 from 3-point range.
Santi Aldama, Morez Johnson Jr., Dereck Lively II, Marcus Sasser, and John Poulakidas did not play for Dallas.
Dallas hosts the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday at American Airlines Center, with tip-off at 7 p.m. CT. The Mavericks open the regular season at Houston on Oct. 21.
