The 2026-27 NBA season will bring enormous expectations for several teams, but few head coaches enter the campaign facing as many questions as Ime Udoka of the Houston Rockets, Brian Keefe of the Washington Wizards and David Adelman of the Denver Nuggets.

Their situations are different. Udoka must turn Houston's star power into a team capable of winning close games. Keefe faces the challenge of accelerating Washington's rebuild after the arrival of established stars.

Adelman, meanwhile, must prove Denver can remain a legitimate championship contender after another disappointing postseason. All three coaches have reasons for optimism, but the margin for error is shrinking. In a league where front offices increasingly judge success by playoff results, another underwhelming season could force difficult decisions.

Ime Udoka, Houston: Time to turn talent into wins

Udoka arguably faces the most immediate pressure of the three coaches. Since taking over Houston in 2023, he has helped establish a more competitive identity around a young core. The Rockets have continued to invest in their roster, and the addition of Kevin Durant has raised expectations considerably. Houston is no longer simply a team trying to develop prospects; it is expected to compete with the Western Conference's best.

Yet the Rockets' struggles in close games exposed a weakness that Udoka must address. Houston played a league-high 45 clutch games last season, defined by the NBA as contests within five points during the final five minutes. Despite Durant appearing in 43 of those games, the Rockets went 20-23 and posted a minus-11.8 net rating with the 16-time All-Star in those situations.

Those numbers point to a team that struggled to execute when possessions mattered most. Houston has enough talent to make a deep postseason run. If the Rockets continue to waste opportunities in close games, however, the scrutiny will increasingly fall on their coach. Udoka has helped raise the team's competitive level. Now he must demonstrate that he can turn that progress into meaningful playoff success.

Brian Keefe, Washington: A rebuild suddenly becomes a playoff race

Keefe faces a different kind of pressure in Washington, where the organization's ambitions have changed dramatically. The Wizards have spent years rebuilding, accumulating young talent and searching for a foundation capable of returning the franchise to relevance. But the reported additions of Trae Young and Anthony Davis have accelerated the timeline, transforming a long-term development project into a team expected to compete much sooner.

That creates a difficult balancing act for Keefe, who has gone 43-160 across three seasons in Washington. The 50-year-old coach made his NBA head-coaching debut in early 2024 and now must manage a roster with competing priorities: developing young players, integrating established stars and delivering enough wins to keep the organization moving forward.

Keefe also must oversee the development of No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa. Integrating a highly touted young prospect into a roster built around established stars requires careful management of playing time, responsibilities and expectations. The challenge is making the pieces fit without sacrificing either the team's immediate competitiveness or its long-term development.

David Adelman, Denver: Championship expectations leave little room for another early exit

Adelman enters the season with perhaps the most straightforward mandate: get the Nuggets back into serious championship contention. Denver finished third in the Western Conference last season and led the league in offensive efficiency, impressive achievements considering the injuries that disrupted its campaign. Nikola Jokic, Cam Johnson, Aaron Gordon, Christian Braun and Spencer Jones all missed significant time.

Those absences complicated Adelman's first season in charge, but the postseason exposed concerns that cannot be dismissed simply by pointing to injuries. The Nuggets lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in six games in the first round. Minnesota was missing Anthony Edwards and Donte DiVincenzo for the final two contests, making Denver's elimination especially difficult to absorb.

For a franchise built around three-time MVP Jokic, another early postseason exit would raise serious questions about whether the roster has enough depth and whether Adelman can get the most out of it when the stakes rise. Adelman must find ways to maintain Denver's offensive efficiency while improving its ability to survive when Jokic rests or opposing defenses take away the team's preferred options. That will require contributions from the supporting cast and greater consistency across the rotation.
