NBA Betting: Houston Rockets Season Long Handicapping 10/21/2026 vs. Dallas Mavericks - Doc's Sports
Doc's Sports

Doc’s Sports will be breaking down every Houston Rockets game this season with the goal of churning a profit throughout the year. Each season, I have selected one NBA team to dial in on, and the results speak for themselves. This is the fifth year of the season-long handicapping experiment, and last year was the best one yet. I took a look at the Atlanta Hawks and went 112-81 overall for a total profit of 69.3 Units. The player props were especially hot with a 68-44 record, and I was able to exploit matchups, find loose lines, and stay in the green. This year, we are going to be combing over every Houston Rockets game, with the goal of surpassing our incredible profit from last season.
Doc’s Sports offers NBA expert picks for every game on our NBA predictions page.
Houston went 52-30 last year despite missing point guard Fred VanVleet for the entire season. They now have VanVleet back in action for the season opener, and have a very unique combination of players for the upcoming season. Houston has the veteran talent needed to lead a franchise in Kevin Durant, VanVleet, Steven Adams, and new arrival Marcus Smart all being 32 or older. However, they also have the youth with Amen Thompson, Jabari Smith Jr., Alperen Sengun, and Reed Sheppard all being 24 or younger. The Rockets are unquestionably better than they were last year as the heart of their lineup inches closer to their prime, while the veterans continue to deliver at a high level. We won’t always side with the Rockets this year, but one of the reasons I chose Houston to dial in on is that they are criminally underrated, and have an excellent roster for unique player props.
Tonight, the Houston Rockets (0-0) host the Dallas Mavericks (0-0) in a battle of Texas rivals. Dallas struggled on the road last year going 10-30, and are once again expected to lose their season opener with a -9.5 point spread in favor of the Rockets. Their future is bright with Cooper Flagg leading the franchise, but the Mavericks are still a few years away from really competing in a stacked Western Conference. On the offensive end, Dallas really struggled last year with the 27th-best offensive rating. Flagg led the way with 21.0 PPG, while the next highest scorer was Naji Marshall at 15.1 PPG. The Mavericks are expected to get an offensive boost with the return of Kyrie Irving after the superstar sat out all of last year due to injury. It is hard to be confident that Irving will look dominant at 34 years old after a year off, but his leadership on the perimeter will certainly elevate this team. The Mavericks have been desperate for a legitimate playmaker to lead this offense, and even if Irving has lost a step of quickness, he will be able to confidently distribute the basketball tonight.
This is a brutal first matchup for the Mavericks. Houston dominated on the glass last year with a league-leading 15.0 offensive rebounds, as they were able to consistently generate second chance points off misses. The Mavericks will be without starting center Dereck Lively tonight, which leaves Daniel Gafford to patrol the paint. Gafford matching up against Sengun gives Houston a massive advantage, and once you add in the size advantage they have at forward, the Rockets will almost certainly dominate the glass. Dallas gave up 12 offensive rebounds per game last season, they have done little to address that weakness, and now get a nightmare matchup in that regard to kick off the season.
Speaking of Sengun, his play will likely determine the ceiling for Houston this year. He was given the flattering nickname of ‘Baby Jokic’ early in his career, as Sengun’s playmaking, rebounding, and scoring were reminiscent of the three-time MVP. His scoring and rebounding numbers took a hit last year, but he made up for it with a career high 6.2 assists per game. Gafford struggles to defend mobile centers, which will allow Sengun to not only crash the offensive glass but also take the ball out and exploit Dallas in the open court. The Rockets have the defense they need around Sengun to thrive, and if he can continue to develop a relationship with Durant in the open floor, this Houston offense could be just as lethal as their top-five defense from last year.
For the first bet of the night, we will look at Sengun’s assist line at 4.5. This is lower than his season average from last year, which is to be expected as VanVleet will take over some of the playmaking responsibilities. However, the Mavericks gave up the most assists to centers in the league last season, which will allow Sengun to facilitate whenever he pleases. There is no shortage of shooters to pass to on this roster, which means Sengun will have ample opportunities to reach this reasonable line.
For the second bet of the night, we are looking at Amen Thompson on the glass. Gang rebounding was a point of emphasis for the Rockets last year, as it was a collective team effort to dominate on the glass rather than the centers racking up double doubles every night. With VanVleet in the fold, the Rockets lose some of their size on the outside, which means Thompson will need to crash the glass on long rebounds. He averaged 7.8 rebounds per game last year which is exceptional for a guard, and this is a great matchup for him to reach that total again. Dallas was very generous to guards on the glass last year, allowing the fifth-most rebounds to opposing guards last year. Thompson doesn’t need a second invitation to get active on the glass, and it appears unlikely Kyrie Irving will be aggressively getting into the dirty areas of the floor in his first game in more than a year. We are getting a very juicy +115 price on Thompson to collect over 7.5 rebounds, which is a line I am very comfortable playing.
Finally, we will be laying the points with the Rockets on the spread. Houston will dominate the paint in this matchup, they are the much better team on the defensive end, and the Mavericks are just looking to try and develop chemistry at this stage rather than take down a legitimate NBA contender. The Rockets have more top-end talent, they have a deeper bench, they are playing at home, and are a nightmare matchup for the Mavericks. If this were a midseason meeting rather than the season debut, this line could easily be a few points higher. The -9.5 feels like an early-season discount, so we will ride with the Rockets tonight.
Pick: Alperen Sengun Over 4.5 Assists -140 2 Units
Pick: Amen Thompson Over 7.5 Rebounds +115 4 Units
Pick: Houston Rockets (-9.5) 2 Units
