It’s a new season in the NBA, and the Boston Celtics have so much to prove. In the aftermath of the Jaylen Brown trade, there are major questions about whether Paul George can truly shoulder the burden of being their number two.

Nevertheless, in a recent chat on 98.5 ‘The Sports Hub,’ the NBA veteran showed no doubt that he can be exactly who the Celtics need. As much as he knows what he can provide on the court, he’s being cautious not to step on anyone’s toes.

“I know how much value I bring to the game to where I don’t have to be known as the guy on the team,” said George. “I still can be efficient; I can still have an imprint on the game with any role that I have. So, again, JT is the guy. I’m here and want to be here to help him be the best version, and help him be in that MVP conversation.”

Paul George has played many roles throughout his NBA career. On the Pacers, he was initially a role player on the wing before ascending into stardom. Eventually, he was traded from the Pacers to the Thunder, where he served as a co-star alongside Russell Westbrook. From 2019 to 2023, George played second fiddle to Kawhi Leonard. Although the Clippers didn’t achieve much playoff success, he found prosperity in his role there for years. It wasn’t until his move to the 76ers that things really fell apart.

With just 42 and 37 games, respectively, George’s last two seasons in Philadelphia have not been encouraging. Even when he has been healthy, the production has just not been there, with averages of 16.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 0.5 blocks per game on 43.4% shooting overall. His contract was considered one of the worst in the NBA, borderline untradeable to some.  Now, in Boston, George has to show that he still has a lot left in the tank without trying to upset the internal hierarchy of the team.

While there are some fears about his fit with Jayson Tatum, George has explained that he’s only here to help enhance what JT brings to the table. Coming off injury-shortened stints of his own, Tatum will have a lot on his plate as he adjusts to his new surroundings. The 6’8″ forward averaged 21.8 points, 10.0 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 1.4 steals, and 0.2 blocks per game on 41.1% shooting from the field last season, but he’ll need to deliver even more without his longtime co-star at his side. At the very least, Paul George’s presence should make Tatum’s job a little easier if he can just stay healthy.

Until the season begins, we have no way of knowing what to expect, but all of the early signs look good. With reports of good health, PG will be in good shape to enter the season, meaning he can step up right away as a key veteran presence on the wing. His initial display of humility and self-awareness has been refreshing, but the Celtics will need it throughout the season to have any hope of keeping up with the top contenders.
