火箭5年2.08亿美元续约阿门·汤普森，合同不含全明星或最佳防守球员奖励条款

On Thursday, it was reported by ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania that the Houston Rockets had signed wing Amen Thompson to a five-year, $208 million contract extension. The move keeps the former lottery pick around for the long haul and gives the Rockets a key building block to work with moving forward.

Despite the generational wealth he will be making, Zach Lowe of The Ringer recently reported on how Thompson actually left some money on the table in this deal.

“Sources say there is *no* escalator clause/s in Amen Thompson’s extension — first reported by (Shams Charani) — if he were to make All-NBA or win Defensive Player of the Year. Deal is below Thompson’s max potential deal but still a ton of money obviously,” he reported on X, formerly Twitter.

The framework is similar to the recent extension signed by San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, which also didn’t include any escalators, giving the franchise a bit more financial breathing room moving forward.

Thompson has already established himself as one of the best defenders in the NBA, as has his brother, Detroit Pistons wing Ausar Thompson, and has also worked hard to expand his playmaking ability and finishing at the rim throughout the course of his young NBA career.

However, the biggest flaw in his game is arguably the most consequential at the NBA level: a lack of outside shooting, which has caused some major spacing issues for Houston over the last few seasons, especially considering that teammate Alperen Sengun is also not known as a marksman.

It remains to be seen if Thompson will be able to fully justify the new contract by adding that element to his game.
