Kevin Durant played 23 minutes in the Houston Rockets’ 135-117 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Friday morning. He finished with 15 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 block, shooting 7-for-12 from the field (58.3% FG) and 1-for-1 from the three-point line (100% 3P).

After the preseason win, Kevin Durant spoke to the media and answered several questions. Among them, a reporter asked the veteran superstar what he felt about potentially surpassing Kobe Bryant’s all-time scoring record in the coming regular season.

“Yeah, it would mean a lot. I mean, as I’ve said, being in the company of greats is always amazing, and it shows how long you have to play. It shows how consistent you have to be as a player,” Kevin Durant said.

“So, it’s just a milestone that speaks to my consistency as a player, you know, and to be among the names that I’m around is real. It’s hard to put into words, you know. I want to do my best every night, bringing something positive to the game, and hopefully, along the way, I continue to move up the charts,” he further added.

Even though the Mavericks game scores don’t count, Kevin Durant is currently at 32,597 regular season points in his career. Kobe Bryant finished his NBA career with 33,643 points, just 1,046 points ahead of Durant. If Durant matched last season’s 26.0 points per game, he would surpass Kobe Bryant’s record in 41 games.

But in total scoring (playoffs and regular season combined), Durant (37,605 points) still trails Michael Jordan (38,279), let alone Kobe Bryant (39,283). However, if Durant consistently maintains a 26-point average in 2026-27, he will surpass Bryant in 65 games for that record as well.

One of the key tools that makes Durant a scoring savant is the mid-range shot. A reporter asked him how he plans to keep the skill alive in an era that consistently moves toward heavy three-point shooting offensive systems.

“Just consistent work. I feel like the midrange game is starting to come back into the NBA. I see a lot of players working on it and taking those shots in games. Just constant work. Always working on my touch every day,” Durant reflected.

Therefore, if Durant keeps up his scoring average, he could overtake Kobe Bryant in the first half of the 2026–2027 season. The Rockets star may rise even higher on the NBA’s all-time scoring charts as he continues to hone his mid-range skills.

At this point, it feels like a privilege to watch Durant keep making history every season. It will be fascinating to see how long Durant takes to overtake these milestones, which he will imminently surpass.
