Abdul-Malik Olajuwon, the youngest son of NBA Hall of Fame center Hakeem Olajuwon, announced his commitment to SMU on Thursday, Oct. 1.

Over the Sept. 26 weekend, Olajuwon visited SMU and met with head coach Andy Enfield. Just days later, he announced his verbal commitment to the Mustangs, choosing SMU over Minnesota, Texas Tech, Virginia and Auburn.

Olajuwon is a four-star recruit and one of the top high school shooting guards in the nation. The high school senior currently plays for IMG Academy, a private sports training academy in Bradenton, Florida, but during the summer plays with JL3, one of the nation’s top AAU basketball programs.

The JL3 Elite team Olajuwon plays for is based out of Houston, the same city his father, Hakeem, rose to prominence as one of the greatest centers in NBA history.

He played for the Houston Rockets from 1984 to 2001, playing all but one season of his career with Houston. Hakeem was a 12-time all-star and two-time defensive player of the year. At the end of his 18-year career, Hakeem finished as the NBA’s all-time blocks leader with 3,830, a record that still stands today.

Coach Enfield is no stranger to signing the sons of former NBA stars. SMU forward Jermaine O’Neal Jr’s father had an 18-year NBA career. While Enfield was the head coach at USC, he signed Bronny James, son of LeBron James.

Olajuwon has not signed yet, but is SMU’s first commit for the high school class of 2027. After signing the best recruiting class in SMU history in 2025, the class of 2026 consisted of just Cameron Lomax, a top-ten recruit in Texas from Frisco Heritage, and Jakub Szumert, a six-foot-nine forward from Poland.

The Mustangs begin their season on Sunday, Oct. 25, with an exhibition game against Texas A&M at Moody Coliseum.
