As the Rockets prepare to face Phoenix, Kevin Durant’s social media sparring with Suns owner Mat Ishbia adds fuel to a high-stakes reunion fueled by revenge and drama.

The Houston Rockets have started this 2026-2027 NBA season about as well as anyone could’ve hoped for. Despite two tough losses, their seven wins still puts this team right near the top of the conference. They also have the third-highest winning percentage in the league, proving to be a formidable opponent early on this season.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have the Phoenix Suns with only two wins and five losses. Being the organization that Houston acquired Kevin Durant from in 2025, there’s a little bit of history there. They’ll be playing on Saturday and trust me when I say there’s no love lost on either side.

Just this past summer, Suns’ owner Mat Ishbia made remarks that caught Durant’s attention, and KD was quick to clap back. As covered here on Roundtable, Durant didn’t even need his burner account this time. He was swift and direct with his messaging.

Multiple posts punctuated with “#BlameKD” made it clear that he felt attacked and needed to defend himself. He was tired of being scapegoated for the laundry list of issues plaguing the Suns as a whole, which is fair.

Unfortunately, I don’t think his responses were warranted at all. In reality, he just got click-baited into it and his emotions got the best of him. Ishbia didn’t blame Durant for anything, and was actually complimentary of him in the interview.

That’s not too dissimilar to something we just saw this past week with a local Houston reporter. This time, Durant managed to accidentally throw a stray shot at Jabari Smith Jr. in the process of defending himself. Again, I don’t think he even needed to defend himself.

He just got offended and lashed out without even understanding the full context. That is slightly concerning to me, but will it actually impact how he plays on the court? Does it matter how he feels or acts outside of that?

Well obviously we don’t want him committing crimes, but I think twitter fingers are okay. I think snarky comments and replies to reporters are fine. That only reflects negatively on him as a person, and doesn’t actually impact the team.

We saw a whole burner account scandal last season, and the Rockets still won 52 games. While I’d prefer more hoops and less drama, I don’t see this minor stuff having any negative impact.

If anything, Durant’s teammates could be motivated to help him get another sweep over the Phoenix Suns. With only three matchups this season, Houston hopes to get things started with a dominant win on Saturday night.
