Rockets Pick Up Reed Sheppard’s Fourth-Year Option

The Rockets have picked up their fourth-year team option on Reed Sheppard’s rookie scale contract, the team announced today (Twitter link via Will Guillory of The Athletic).
The move guarantees Sheppard’s salary for the 2027/28 season. He’ll earn $11.11MM this season and $14.04MM next season before becoming eligible for restricted free agency in 2028. Houston could keep him off the RFA market that summer by signing him to a rookie scale extension during the 2027 offseason.
After being drafted third overall in 2024 out of Kentucky, Sheppard played a very limited role for the Rockets as a rookie. But with Fred VanVleet out for the year with an ACL tear in 2025/26, Sheppard took on more responsibilities in his second NBA season, appearing in all 82 regular season games and averaging 26.2 minutes per night. He averaged 13.5 points, 3.4 assists, and 2.9 rebounds per game with a .430/.394/.802 shooting line and finished sixth in Sixth Man of the Year voting.
Even with VanVleet back this fall, Sheppard has continued to develop his play-making skills, handing out at least four assists in all four of his outings so far this season for the 5-0 Rockets.
Houston has been aggressive in locking up its young players to long-term contracts in recent years, most recently signing Amen Thompson to a rookie scale extension and Tari Eason to a free agent contract ahead of the 2026/27 season, so Sheppard will be among the top candidates for an extension among 2024 first-rounders next offseason.
