On Saturday, Kevin Durant and Mat Ishbia got into a back-and-forth regarding the two-time NBA champion’s stint with the Phoenix Suns. Durant took issue with Ishbia’s claim that KD’s arrival in Phoenix didn’t “necessarily lead to championships,” while the Suns owner countered by saying that he “didn’t blame” Durant in the TV interview that had gone viral.
Out of nowhere, Phoenix Suns enforcer Dillon Brooks decided to get involved. Brooks, who was one of the players moved in the seven-team trade that shipped Durant away from Phoenix, expressed support for Ishbia in an Instagram story.
“Thanks (Mat) for cleaning up that stench in the locker room before I came #culture,” Brooks wrote.
Brooks, of course, has been known to antagonize a number of NBA stars. Back when he suited up for the Memphis Grizzlies, he took pride in his decision to “poke bears” when he played mind games with then-LA Lakers main man LeBron James.
While Ishbia went on to wish Durant “good luck in Houston,” KD appeared to get the final word when he downplayed the Suns owner’s attempt at courtesy.
“U should be giving Thanks every chance u get. You don’t have to pay me an absurd amount of money to play for another team.”
Durant has developed a reputation as a fierce social media personality. With the same vigor that he’s displayed in responding to fans who find reasons to bash him, Durant did not back down from what he perceived to be a slight from Ishbia.
“He Is Not Slowing Down”: Reporter Hails Kevin Durant as a Model of Consistency
While Brooks disparaged Kevin Durant with his social media remark, NBA insider Chris B. Haynes praised KD for continuing to play at a high level in the twilight of his career.
Appearing on NBA TV this past Thursday, Haynes gave props to Durant for staying consistent with his work on and off the court.
“He is not slowing down…You’ve got young guys calling him constantly throughout the summer, trying to work out with him…He’s somebody who just loves the game.”
At 38 years old, Durant looks to lead the Rockets to a deep playoff run as he hunts his third NBA championship. And, as the NBA TV crew pointed out, he just happens to be 1,047 points away from overtaking Kobe Bryant for fourth on the league’s all-time scoring list.
